What is it?

Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a widespread skin condition marked by itchy, red bumps of varying sizes that can appear anywhere on the body. Typically, this condition results from an allergic reaction triggered by factors such as food, medications, insect stings or stress. The rash usually resolves within a day, but new bumps may emerge, making it seem as though the condition is ongoing or shifting across the body. Hives are classified as chronic if they persist for more than six weeks, which could signal a more serious underlying health issue.

How is it treated?

A dermatologist can offer significant relief for patients suffering from hives. They will start by identifying the underlying cause and triggers of the condition, which is crucial for managing and preventing future outbreaks. If the hives are a sign of a more serious health issue, our board-certified dermatologists in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, can help diagnose and address it. Additionally, dermatologists can provide relief by prescribing antihistamines, corticosteroids or other anti-inflammatory medications to reduce itching and swelling. While hives can cause discomfort and anxiety, they can be effectively managed and controlled with the right dermatological care.
