Any disease or condition resulting from a fungus (yeast or mold) most typically affects the skin, hair, nails or mucous membranes when the immune system is weakened, or environmental changes occur.
What is it?
Fungal infections, such as ringworm, yeast infections or athlete's foot, occur when a pathogen—an organism that causes disease—invades your body and multiplies in a specific area, overwhelming your immune system’s defenses. While these infections are most commonly found on the skin and nails, they can also impact other areas such as the mouth, throat, lungs, urinary tract and more. They often thrive in environments with moisture or significant friction.
Fungal infections can affect anyone, but individuals with weakened immune systems, poor circulation or conditions like diabetes are especially susceptible. Symptoms usually include changes in skin appearance, rashes, skin cracking or peeling and itching, often accompanied by redness, swelling or bumps in the affected area.
How is it treated?
With many types of fungal infections, it's important to seek evaluation from our board-certified dermatologists if the infection does not resolve on its own. If you suspect a fungal infection, one of the medical providers from the Chapel Hill Dermatology team can accurately diagnose and treat the condition using antifungal medications and topical remedies. These treatments work by eliminating or stopping the growth of the fungus within your body. After a thorough assessment, we will prescribe a treatment plan tailored to provide prompt and effective results.
