A common and often itchy scalp condition in which small pieces of flaky skin fall off the head.
What is it?
Dandruff is a common skin condition primarily affecting the scalp, causing white flakes of dead skin to fall onto the shoulders and often leading to scalp irritation. Several factors can trigger dandruff, including dry skin, sensitivity to hair care products, inadequate shampooing and a yeast-like fungus called malassezia. While dandruff generally affects adults and men more than women, it can cause discomfort and self-consciousness for those who experience it. It is important to note that dandruff is not related to poor hygiene, though it may become more apparent if you do not wash your hair regularly.
How is it treated?
One of our board-certified dermatologists at Chapel Hill Dermatology can be instrumental in managing and treating dandruff. They will assess your scalp and possibly conduct further tests to pinpoint the exact cause of your dandruff. Based on the cause and severity, we might recommend medicated shampoos, creams, or lotions. For more persistent cases, prescription-strength shampoos or steroid lotions may be suggested. Additionally, we can provide guidance on proper hair care and lifestyle adjustments. If you’re experiencing dandruff symptoms, schedule an appointment at one of our office.
