An itchy, painful and blistering rash that can reemerge from the same virus that causes chickenpox.
What is it?
Herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles, is a viral infection characterized by a painful skin rash with blisters, typically arranged in a band-like pattern on one side of the body. This condition is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus responsible for chickenpox. After an episode of chickenpox, the virus can remain dormant in nerve tissues for years or even decades before reactivating later in life, leading to herpes zoster. Common symptoms include pain, itching and a burning sensation that often precede the rash, which may also be accompanied by fever, headache and fatigue.
How is it treated?
The team at Chapel Hill Dermatology can play a crucial role in managing herpes zoster. By examining the rash, they can accurately diagnose the condition and recommend the most effective treatment options. A timely visit to one of our board-certified dermatologists can help manage symptoms, especially the severe pain associated with shingles, and prevent potential complications like postherpetic neuralgia, which can cause persistent pain long after the rash has healed. Our dermatologists may offer treatments such as antiviral medications to address the virus and reduce the severity and duration of the infection, corticosteroids to decrease inflammation and various pain management strategies.
