What is it?

Herpes is a common and highly contagious condition characterized by recurring outbreaks of small, painful blisters filled with clear fluid. These blisters typically appear on or around the mouth or genital area but can occur anywhere on the skin. The condition is caused by two types of viruses: Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1), which primarily causes oral herpes, and Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV-2), which mainly causes genital herpes. Most people with the virus do not show symptoms, which often leads to the virus being spread unknowingly. Although there is no cure for herpes, the condition can be managed, and recurrences can become less severe and less frequent over time.

How is it treated?

A dermatologist can provide invaluable assistance to patients looking to control herpes symptoms. Once a herpes diagnosis is confirmed, our dermatologists can prescribe antiviral medications to help control outbreaks, reduce the risk of transmission and diminish the severity and duration of symptoms. They can also offer guidance on lifestyle factors that may trigger flare-ups, such as stress and poor sleep. Additionally, our team can provide important education on preventing the spread of herpes to others. With effective management and the right approach, individuals with herpes can lead fully active and rewarding lives. If you are experiencing herpes symptoms, contact our office located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
